Internet Pornography Burrows Deeper Into Culture

ROME, FEB. 24, 2008 (Zenit.org).- In Lent we should think of fasting not only in relation to food and drink, but also from images, recommended Benedict XVI. The Pope’s advice came during a question-and-answer session with Rome’s clergy, held Feb. 7.

The question dealt with how best to evangelize people as to what is true beauty in the context of contemporary culture. Part of the Pontiff’s reply dealt with the use of images and also the problems created by mistaken ideals of beauty. During Lent:, “we need a space that is free from the permanent bombardment of images,” Benedict XVI commented.

Selective Abortions Take High Toll of Girls

ROME, SEPT. 17, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Fears of a demographic crisis are mounting in India, where many years of female feticide have severely skewed the makeup of the population. Ironically, one of the latest warnings came from Ena Singh, a representative of the U.N. Population Fund -- itself responsible for promoting abortion.

Singh told the news agency Reuters, in a report published Aug. 31, that the lack of women could lead to an increase in sexual violence and child abuse. According to the United Nations, an estimated 2,000 unborn girls are illegally aborted every day in India.

Vatican Aide Offers 3 Back-to-School Tips

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 17, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education offered students some advice as the new school year gets under way.

Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski told Vatican Radio that students should try to grow in true wisdom, develop an ever-increasing critical sense and know how to discern good from evil.
